Posted by Paulownia is one of the world’s fastest-growing tree species. Primarily used in the sustainable production of timber and wooden products, Paulownia is a special tree thanks to its ability to regenerate when harvested. It also offers other environmental benefits such as being non-invasive, having low water requirements and easy to maintain making it an ideal tree species for sustainable timber production.
Finterra Global Plantations has been instrumental in planting Paulownia trees in Malaysia over the last two years. Using tissue culture, seedlings are created in labs, before being planted in actual plantations. The entire cycle from seedling to harvests takes a mere 40 months as compared to other similar Paulownia species from temperate regions which can take between 84 months (7 years) to 144 months (12 years) to be harvested. This saves on time, money and effort on replanting and allows for our timber to go to market much quicker, thus enabling us to take advantage in meeting the huge demand for timber by the industry.
After being harvested, the trees (logs) are delivered to various sawmills where multiple industrial products are created by processing the wood. Some of the common and popular uses include:
- Sawn timber
- Produced from 3.5 years old onwards Paulownia trees.
- Moulded and edge glued.
- Plywood
- Produced best from timber of Paulownia trees above the age of 3.5 years as the timber is much harder and well suited for plywood production.
- Veneers
- Produced from 3.5 years old Paulownia.
- Have anti-cracking and wear-resistant qualities.
- Dovetail/box joints
- Paulownia is one of the best species for creating box joints as it allows for easy interlocking of two pieces of wood with little or no glue on the surface of the joint.
- Finger joints
- Stronger, thinner and more delicately cut than dovetail joint, Paulownia allows for these joints to have a seamless appearance on the wood.
After the Paulownia timber has been processed into sawn timber or other types of wood, these can then be used further processed downstream to create finished products such as furniture, musical instruments, handicrafts, sporting products, beehives and many more. Other useful applications of Paulownia are continuously being explored which will further cement its importance as a sustainable tree species to counter deforestation while also meeting the huge demand for timber globally.
